Medications to Avoid in Heart Failure Patients

Certain medicines may cause clinical worsening in patients with heart failure. Follow the below guidelines to avoid further damage.

  • NSAIDs should not be used in all types of heart failure

  • Third generation calcium channel blockers such as amlodipine may be used for blood pressure control in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF)

  • Other calcium channel blockers such as verapamil, diltiazem, and nifedipine should be avoided in patients with HFrEF

  • Routine use of nitrates should be avoided in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)
